Work Safely at Heights

Overview

Falls are a major cause of death and serious injury in Australian workplaces. Fall hazards are found in many workplaces where work is carried out at height, for example stacking shelves, working on a roof, unloading a large truck or accessing silos. Falls can also occur at ground level by falling into holes, trenches or service pits.

This program focuses on the skills and knowledge required to work safely on construction sites where the work activity involves working above 1.5 metres from ground level and where fall protection measures are required.

Course objectives:
The main objectives of the Work Safely at Heights course are:

Showing a competent understanding of:

  • Legislation, Standards and Codes of Practice applicable to working at heights in the building and construction industry;
  • Hazards commonly present in the building and construction industry;
  • Hazard control measures for hazards associated with working at heights in the building and construction industry;
  • Compliance requirements for working at heights in the building and construction industry;
  • Selection, inspection and use of appropriate fall protection equipment to conduct work at heights in the building and construction industry; and
  • Access to work area and perform work at heights in the building and construction industry.

Entry requirements

To be permitted entry to this course you must:

  • Be 18 years old or have authorised parental/guardian consent to be eligible to complete this course;
  • Have current  photo I.D and a Unique Student Identifier (USI);
  • Be wearing enclosed footwear, appropriate work clothes and have remove all jewellery.

All learning resources will be provided to students on the day; including pens and examination papers.

Foundation skills

Foundation skills are skills pertaining to language, literacy, numeracy and employability skills. You will be required to undertake a short language, literacy and numeracy test (LLN) prior to your  enrolment. The purpose of this test is to ascertain comprehensive proficiency levels against the performance criteria of this unit of competency.

Qualification: Statement of Attainment – training in Work Safely at Heights

Career pathway: There are no formal pathways for this course.  However the unit covered provide credits toward a number of Certificate II or III qualifications in the Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package.
