Conduct Manual Tasks Safely (Manual Handling)

Overview

Manual handling, or manual tasks, is the activity of lifting, moving, pushing, pulling, carrying or holding any object or person.

Poor manual handling is one of the most common causes of severe injury in the workplace.

The course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to recognise potentially hazardous manual tasks, and then to prepare for and complete those tasks in a safe manner.

Course objectives
The main objectives of the Conduct Manual Tasks Safely course are:

• Work instructions and operational details are obtained, confirmed and applied from relevant information for planning and preparation;
• Construction materials are moved to specified locations applying safe manual handling techniques;
• Construction materials and components are stacked/banded for mechanical handling in accordance with the type of material, plant and equipment to be used;
• Work area is cleared and materials disposed of, reused or recycled in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes of practice and job specification; and
• Tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and standard work practices.

Entry requirements

To be permitted entry to this course you must:

• Be 18 years old or have authorised parental/guardian consent to be eligible to complete this course;
• Have current  photo I.D and a Unique Student Identifier (USI);
• Be wearing enclosed footwear, appropriate work clothes and have remove all jewellery.

All learning resources will be provided to students on the day; including pens and examination papers.

Foundation skills

Foundation skills are skills pertaining to language, literacy, numeracy and employability skills. You will be required to undertake a short language, literacy and numeracy test (LLN) prior to your  enrolment. The purpose of this test is to ascertain comprehensive proficiency levels against the performance criteria of this unit of competency.

Qualification: Statement of Attainment – training in Conduct Manual Tasks Safely

Career pathway: There are no formal pathways for this course.  However the unit covered provide credits toward a number of Certificate II or III qualifications in the Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package.
